A 3am start as the flight with Jetstar leaves Gold Coast Airport at 6:15am for the 3 hours 20 minutes flight to Queenstown (New Zealand is 3 hours ahead of Queensland). Yes Jetstar, as Air New Zealand wanted $1000 return instead of Jetstar's $625. Let's hope we don't regret this choice as Jetstar can be very unreliable. Jetstar was excellent! Check-in on-line and bag-drop at the airport were both fast and well managed.

The airport's security check was fine and we later had to go through more security checks which are apparently demanded by New Zealand. This actually proved to be a real issue as we were not advised of this 2nd check in the new international area and it took ages, so much so that we nearly missed the flight.

The 3 hour 20 minute flight was good and we were actually given A$15 worth of food (we had excellent vegetarian sandwiches that our ticket apparently included). The sky was very cloudy just about the whole way to Queenstown and the pilot announced it would be cold and raining on arrival. Well it was raining very lightly but by the time we left the terminal, after waiting an hour for our bags, the sky was blue and the temperature warm. Just a couple of kilometres from the airport, we picked up out Vitz (an imported Toyota Yaris) rental car from EZU and had a short drive to our accommodation at Laurel Bank House in Lower Shotover (about 11 kilometres from Queenstown). an old Federation house in 5 acres of garden. Jeni liked our "suite" but I thought it was a bit cramped although the sunny deck outside was lovely in the evening when the light was still bright at 9pm.

After unpacking, it was so warm by late afternoon that we headed to the Frankton Arm Tavern and sat outside gazing at the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu in a sunny blue and white background
